Teaching Phonics
About Phonics
There are two types of phonics synthetic and analytical. We and the majority of ESL schools teach synthetic phonics. Synthetic phonics mean you sound out a word using the individual phonic sounds e.g. c – a – t = cat. A lot of the world including schools in English speaking countries are choosing phonics as the major foundation block for learning to read.
Resources
The school has a copy of the Phonics Handbook: A handbook for teaching, reading, writing and spelling by Sue Lloyd. This book is full of resources, theory, ideas and worksheets. It will help you to atleast understand the philosophy of phonics better and hopefully improve your phonics teaching.
Video
This video is from teachers.tv which has a lot more interesting videos about teaching. It talks about the importance of phonics and shows footage of students learning phonics in a variety of fun and interesting ways.
